Antiques with Black Hills Historical Significance to be added to our permanent collections
Written, Audio and Video Histories to enhance our growing archives
Family and Area Photographs for our large collection of Black Hills photography
Books/Other Ephemera to include in our research library (duplicates used for fundraising sales to benefit the BHHS)
Other Antiques to be sold during fundraising opportunities to benefit the BHHS
Black Hills Historical Society’s Collection Policy
Purpose Statement:
The Black Hills Historical Society’s collection serves to tell the story of the early pioneering period (focusing on the years prior to the 1950s) of the Black Hills and West River area of South Dakota.
Areas of Interest:
Early explorations of the West River area of South Dakota.
The fur trade in South Dakota West of the Missouri River.
Mining in areas other than Lead/Deadwood including Rockerville, Hill City, Rochford, Mystic, Rapid City and environs, Custer and other perhaps lesser known areas.
The open range period (1878-1912) in West River area of South Dakota.
The homesteader era in West River and the growth of towns including industry, transportation, social, intellectual and political life in the period up to the 1940s.
Selection Criteria:
Availability of similar materials elsewhere in the region.
Significance of materials in telling the pioneer story in the region.
Donor's ability and willingness to unconditionally deed the donated physical property and rights to the Association and to allow access to the gift materials for purposes of preservation, study, exhibit, and reproduction.
Condition of items and processing, storage and preservation requirements.
Research and/or exhibit value of the materials.
